Homeschooling in Texas has always offered families flexibility, community, and a chance to build something better for their children. With the rollout of Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA), families and co-ops now have new opportunities and new responsibilities.
This page gives you clear, practical information so you can make strong decisions without getting overwhelmed. If you need hands-on support, 5 Loaves Consulting is here to guide you.
Understanding Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA)
Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, Texas families may receive state-funded support for educational expenses.
Funding amounts include:
• Homeschool students: $2,000
• Private school students: $10,300–$10,800
• Students with disabilities: up to $30,000
Funds may be used for curriculum, tutoring, online courses, hybrid co-op programs, and education services from approved providers.
How TEFA Affects Homeschool Families
• Helps offset curriculum, materials, tutoring, and dual-credit costs
• Gives families more access to enrichment and academic support
• Requires spending through approved vendors
• Does not convert a homeschooler into a private-school student
• Still preserves family autonomy
How TEFA Affects Homeschool Co-Ops
• Potential new revenue through approved vendor status
• More affordability for families joining your co-op
• Opportunities for expansion into hybrid or microschool models
• New administrative requirements for compliance and documentation
This is a moment for co-ops to strengthen their operations and prepare for growth.
